Democratic Senators Seek Details on USS Abraham Lincoln Conditions After Extended Deployment

Resumen

Senate Democrats have asked the defense and navy secretaries for an explanation of reported supply shortages, plumbing problems and mental-health concerns aboard the carrier after a record-long deployment.

Senate Democrats wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao on Wednesday, requesting a full accounting of conditions on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for more than 250 days, including over 200 consecutive days without shore leave. Senator Richard Blumenthal cited reports of food shortages, water contamination, plumbing failures, deteriorating mental health among crew members and safety concerns on the deck.

A Navy spokesperson told CBS News that the ship is operating in a highly contested environment where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East have been disrupted by combat actions. The spokesperson said leadership has prioritized mission-critical supplies—first food, then hygiene items, then mail—and that current reports confirm continuous access to clean water, functional air conditioning and healthy meals.

The carrier left San Diego on Nov. 21 for duties in the South China Sea, was later rerouted to the Middle East, and remained deployed during the February 28 U.S.–Israeli attacks on Iran. Family members of the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard have met with Navy officials, raising concerns about food shortages and mental-health stresses, including reports of suicide attempts.

Senator Ruben Gallego posted on social media that a bipartisan congressional delegation should be allowed to visit the ship for an oversight investigation. The Navy official responded that, based on available information, there has been no identified increase in suicidal ideation or attempts, and that the ship provides a comprehensive support network, including counselors, chaplains, family-support services, Military OneSource and medical personnel.
