Rookie performances highlighted in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL preseason
Analyst Chad Reuter graded a standout rookie from each of the 16 preseason games, noting a strong debut by Rams quarterback Ty Simpson and a notable showing by a Denver Broncos running back.
Analyst Chad Reuter evaluated one rookie from each of the 16 games played in the first week of the 2026 NFL preseason, focusing on how newcomers fared against top-level competition. He emphasized that the grades reflect only the players' performances in that specific week and are not forecasts of future success.
Rams quarterback Ty Simpson received the highest grade, with Reuter noting his poise and accuracy in limited action, describing the debut as a "strong start" for the first-round pick. The Denver Broncos running back also earned a positive assessment after contributing significant yardage and showing effective vision in the backfield.
Other rookies highlighted included Steelers wide receiver Germie Bernard, who recorded four catches for 51 yards against the Packers and demonstrated resilience after a hard hit. Bernard also displayed blocking ability that helped create running lanes, though Reuter said he must improve consistency in route running and quarterback communication.
"The evaluations are meant to take stock of how the rookie played in Week 1 of the preseason, not to predict long-term outcomes," Reuter wrote.
The grades provide a snapshot of each player's early impact as they adjust to new teams and cities.
