Mark Walter seeks cash by exploring early exit from Lakers and Dodgers TV contracts
Los Angeles Lakers owner Mark Walter has been negotiating a lump-sum payout to end local TV deals and is considering selling his stake in Chelsea to improve liquidity.
Los Angeles Lakers owner Mark Walter has been pursuing a lump-sum payout that would allow Charter Communications to exit the team's and the Los Angeles Dodgers' regional television agreements ahead of schedule. The effort follows months of attempts to raise cash, including discussions with Charter that did not result in a deal.
At the end of last year, Charter hired the Raine Group to explore a sale of Spectrum SportsNet, the regional sports network that broadcasts Lakers games. It remains uncertain how the recent acquisition of the Lakers by Kushner and Iger will influence that process.
Walter has also indicated that he is willing to place his ownership stake in Premier League club Chelsea on the market to address his liquidity needs, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation. A spokesperson for Walter’s firm TWG Global did not respond to a request for comment.
