Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary sees David Crowley narrowly defeat Francesca Hong

Resumen

County Executive David Crowley won the Democratic primary for governor by a margin of less than half a percentage point, overturning early polls that had favored state representative Francesca Hong.

County Executive David Crowley secured the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor after a close vote count showed him ahead of state representative Francesca Hong by less than 0.5 percentage point. The Associated Press declared Crowley the winner early Wednesday following the certification of results in Milwaukee, Winnebago and Green counties.

Crowley's comeback followed his brief withdrawal from the race in early July and a subsequent endorsement from incumbent Governor Tony Evers, whose approval rating exceeds 50% in a recent survey. Campaign manager Garren Randolph said Crowley is prepared to "build a broad coalition and win in November."

Hong, who had led most pre-election polls by double digits, conceded and posted on Instagram that she would "fully support" Crowley in the November contest, emphasizing the broader goals of the progressive movement.

Crowley will face Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany in the November 3 general election. Tiffany, endorsed by President Donald Trump, is expected to campaign on a steady, Wisconsin-focused platform, according to local voters.

The primary also highlighted the influence of Republican spending aimed at raising Hong's profile, a strategy intended to shape the Democratic field. Crowley’s campaign warned that such outside funding could affect voter perceptions.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, a longtime acquaintance of Crowley, described him as "down-to-earth" and a "fighter" who will serve diverse communities across the state.

Crowley’s running mate will be Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, while Tiffany will be joined by former Lancaster Mayor David Varnam on the GOP ticket.
