Colombia searches for thousands missing after 7.4 magnitude quake kills at least 181

Résumé

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake in western Colombia has killed at least 181 people, injured nearly 2,600 and left up to 3,900 missing, prompting a large-scale rescue effort.

Rescue teams and volunteers combed through rubble on Tuesday after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing. President Abelardo de la Espriella reported 181 fatalities, about 2,595 injuries and at least 195 people still unaccounted for, while civilian databases estimate the missing could approach 3,900. The quake destroyed 1,136 homes and damaged many more, with the highest death tolls reported in Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó.

The disaster tests the new president, who took office only days before the quake. He said the entire military and police forces, along with engineers, rescue workers and search dogs, have been mobilized, and pledged that “Choco will never again be the ‘land of the forgotten.’”

In the remote Choco region, which is difficult to access and has a history of armed conflict, local leaders said damage is extensive but full assessments are pending. Sterling Palacios, a regional religious and environmental leader, noted that many towns have been reduced to rubble and that reaching isolated communities may take weeks.

Families are using citizen-run websites to share information about missing relatives. One resident from El Cairo, a town where 80% of structures were damaged, said she hopes her uncle is alive despite having no contact.

Municipal authorities in Pereira and Cali reported dozens of building collapses and imposed curfews to prevent looting. Pereira also restricted private vehicle traffic to allow emergency services to operate.

The United States announced $15.5 million in aid for emergency shelter, food and other assistance, and several Latin American governments have pledged additional support.
