Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater Announces Official Retirement, Placed on Lions' Reserve List

Summary

Teddy Bridgewater confirmed his retirement from the NFL, joining the Detroit Lions' reserve/retired list as the team signs Josh Dobbs for quarterback depth.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater posted on Instagram on Monday that he is officially retiring, citing physical limitations that prevent him from playing. He wrote that his body can no longer recover as it once did and that he is ending his playing career.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell had earlier indicated that Bridgewater was stepping away from the team. NFL Network reported that the Lions placed him on the reserve/retired list and subsequently signed quarterback Josh Dobbs to a one-year contract worth $1.4 million to add depth.

Bridgewater, a former first-round pick in 2014, was a Pro Bowl selection with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015 before a severe knee injury in 2016 curtailed his momentum. He later served as a backup with several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Lions, and started 29 games in 2020 and 2021.

The Lions now turn to other options in the quarterback room, including recent signing Dobbs and existing players Luke Altmyer and Jared Goff, as they prepare for their season opener on Sept. 13 against the New Orleans Saints.
