Peggy Flanagan Wins Minnesota Democratic Senate Primary

Resumen

Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan defeated U.S. Rep. Angie Craig in the Democratic Senate primary, positioning herself as the progressive challenger against the party establishment.

Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating centrist Representative Angie Craig. Flanagan emphasized a campaign focused on limiting corporate influence and confronting President Donald Trump, telling supporters, "For months now, I have been telling you that this campaign was about the many versus the money. Well guess what? The many just won."

The primary outcome reflects growing progressive momentum among Democratic voters, following recent insurgent victories in other states. Flanagan will face former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, who won the Republican nomination, in the November general election. Minnesota has not elected a Republican to a statewide office since 2006.

Tafoya criticized incumbent politicians, stating, "We’ve had a crisis of leadership here. We’ve seen what career politicians have done in this state. They’ve brought us to a place of national embarrassment, and this state is ready for change."

Craig, who received endorsements from party leaders such as House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, highlighted her legislative experience but conceded after the vote, urging supporters to back Flanagan. Flanagan was endorsed by progressive figures including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as retiring Senator Tina Smith.

The race was shaped by debates over immigration policy, corporate financing, and U.S. support for Israel, with both candidates attracting significant outside spending. Republican primary results saw state House Speaker Lisa Demuth defeat former Trump-endorsed businessman Mike Lindell for the gubernatorial nomination.
