Boat captain indicted after New York Harbor capsizing kills mother and infant
Manuel Hernandez was indicted on two counts of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer for the capsizing of a tour boat near the Statue of Liberty on 7 August that killed 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter, NBC News reported on 11 August. The 22-foot Bayliner, carrying 14 passengers, overturned in New York Harbor on 7 August, killing the mother and infant and prompting the rescue of twelve other passengers, CNN said. Authorities noted the vessel was operating without a required license and was overcrowded, leading to the captain’s earlier arrest on reckless endangerment charges, according to reports from NBC News, AP and CBS.
