Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned his seat to force a by-election in Clacton while a parliamentary standards inquiry examines a £5 million gift he received before his election.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, stepped down as MP for Clacton, prompting a by-election that sees a record 34 candidates contest the seat. The resignation comes as the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner investigates whether Farage breached the Commons code of conduct by failing to declare a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne, which Farage says was an unconditional personal gift intended for his security.
The investigation, launched after Farage’s claim that the gift pre-dated his election, requires MPs to register any registrable benefits received in the 12 months before they are elected. Farage has denied any wrongdoing and argued that voters should judge his actions.
Main opposition parties have chosen not to field candidates, describing the vote as a distraction while the inquiry is pending. Reform UK has spent about £150,000 on the campaign and aims for a decisive win; party sources say a 70 % vote share would solidify Farage’s position even if the standards inquiry later finds a breach.
Clacton, a constituency in north-east Essex, has a history of high-profile elections, including the 2014 UKIP by-election win by Douglas Carswell and a strong Leave vote in the 2016 EU referendum. In the 2024 general election, Farage secured the seat with 46 % of the vote, the highest share for Reform UK.
"The £5 million was an unconditional gift, I can spend it on cars if I want to," Farage told the BBC, adding that the money was for his personal security.
The by-election is being closely watched as a test of Farage’s political standing and the potential impact of the standards investigation on his future parliamentary prospects.
