Raiders practice highlights fullback impact, rookie development and defensive efforts
The Raiders' training camp practice featured strong contributions from fullback Connor Heyward, progress from rookie quarterback Malik Benson and quarterback Zachary (Zach) Azzanni, and notable defensive plays despite missed turnovers.
The Raiders' latest training camp session saw the defensive line disrupt two Kirk Cousins passes at the line of scrimmage, with Malcolm Koonce and Jonah Laulu making the plays. Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and cornerback Decamerion Richardson each came close to interceptions, but the ball was not secured.
Veteran defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi, signed a day earlier, made an immediate impact in the run game, adding to his career total of 28 tackles for loss.
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza continued to build chemistry with receivers, completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown on Thursday and delivering additional chunk plays in Sunday practice, including two to rookie Malik Benson. > "Time on task helps everybody gets better, that's got to keep getting better," coach Klint Kubiak said of the connection. > "I just want him to keep getting better. Him, Aidan, Kirk, all those guys, just keep improving."
Fullback Connor Heyward logged 13 snaps in the preseason game and contributed blocks that aided runs by Ashton Jeanty and third-down conversions to Michael Mayer. He described his role as helping the offense stretch the defense both horizontally and vertically. Teammate Dylan Laube praised Heyward and Pat Gurd, noting they create the holes for the running game.
Undrafted rookie receiver Chase Robertshad caught a 12-yard first down against the Cardinals and earned additional reps after a touchdown catch in one-on-one drills. He later secured two receptions from Aidan O'Connell during team period. > "He's had a solid camp. He's improving," Kubiak said of Robertshad.
