Raiders rookie and veteran performances scrutinized in preseason loss to Cardinals
In the Raiders' preseason opener, several first-year players and newcomers struggled defensively and offensively, prompting questions about their future roles.
The Las Vegas Raiders fell behind early in their preseason home game against the Arizona Cardinals as a number of rookies and recent signings failed to make a positive impact. Cornerbacks Jermod McCoy and Hezekiah Masses, both drafted this year, were each beaten on multiple passing plays, including two touchdowns, while the defense allowed several short-field gains.
Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, also on the second-team defense, was penalized for unnecessary roughness and subsequently gave up multiple receptions on the Cardinals' scoring drives. Kicker Kansei Matsuzawa's debut was marred by a kickoff that went out of bounds, setting up a short field for Arizona, and a 38-yard field-goal attempt that struck the upright.
Quarterback Aidan O'Connell completed four of 13 passes, with his longest connection a 41-yard throw to EJ Williams. The drive ended after a sack and an incomplete pass on fourth down. Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett II saw six targets but recorded only one catch, struggling to establish timing with O'Connell throughout the game.
The performance raised concerns among the coaching staff about the readiness of several players who are competing for roster spots as the preseason progresses.
