Broncos Day 8 camp highlights: Bryant shines, Coleman impresses, Uwazurike shows pass rush
During Day 8 of Denver Broncos training camp, second-year receiver Pat Bryant emerged as a top target, rookie running back Jonah Coleman displayed strong inside runs, and defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike was noted for improved pass-rushing after offseason work.
The Broncos held a controlled scrimmage on Day 8 of camp while head coach Sean Payton attended Drew Brees’ Hall of Fame induction in Canton. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph ran the practice and fielded questions about several players.
Second-year wide receiver Pat Bryant became the most frequently targeted pass-catcher in practice, recording multiple receptions, including a touchdown catch while under double coverage. Joseph described Bryant as a "complete package" who can block, catch in traffic and be effective in the red zone.
Rookie running back Jonah Coleman had several successful runs between the tackles and scored a short-field touchdown. Observers noted his ability to catch out of the backfield and pass-block, suggesting he could compete for a larger role in the backfield.
Defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike was highlighted for a noticeable change in physique and increased pass-rush ability. Joseph said Uwazurike has become a "pass rusher" after losing weight and that he has been dominant in the past two days of practice.
Injury updates indicated that offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo, linebacker Jordan Turner, center Luke Wattenberg, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, tight end/FB Nate Adkins, edge rusher Dasan McCullough, cornerback Sam Fresch Jr., tight end Caleb Lohner, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., special-teams player Devon Key, defensive lineman Matt Henningsen and kicker Wil Lutz were all absent from practice for various reasons. Defensive lineman Matt Henningsen missed practice after suffering a torn Achilles the previous day.
Several veterans, including cornerback Pat Surtain II, defensive lineman Zach Allen, tight end Evan Engram, safety Talanoa Hufanga and right tackle Mike McGlinchey, had rest days. Replacements included Uwazurike for Allen and other backups in various positions.
Defensive coordinator Joseph said the unit’s continuity allows players to self-correct and maintain motivation, while offensive coordinator Davis Webb expressed satisfaction with quarterback Bo Nix’s progress entering his third year. Special-teams coordinator Darren Rizzi noted that backup kicker Brandon Jones successfully made three of four field-goal attempts in practice.
Overall, the day emphasized emerging contributors on both sides of the ball and continued roster adjustments as the Broncos prepare for the upcoming preseason.
