Ukraine conducts large-scale drone raid on Russia, killing at least six
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russian territory, causing multiple fatalities, while Russia carried out missile strikes in Ukraine that killed several civilians.
Ukraine deployed hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday, resulting in at least six deaths, including an 83-year-old man in the Moscow region. The attacks also damaged a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk and targeted three towns in the Rostov region, where more than 150 drones caused casualties, property damage and a forest fire.
Russia's defence ministry reported destroying 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, and Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 600 drones were detected heading toward the capital, with a third intercepted over the Moscow region.
In retaliation, Russian missile strikes hit Ukrainian cities. A missile attack on Kryvyi Rih killed two people, wounded 14 and damaged an ArcelorMittal steel plant, while a separate strike in Sumy caused another civilian death. Additional Russian strikes in Zaporizhzhia killed a man and a woman, and fires sparked by attacks in Kyiv injured six people and damaged a major book market near the Pochaina metro station.
"Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
NATO forces also responded to drone activity in the region. A Spanish Air and Space Force F-18, operating under NATO air policing duties, shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace near Galati at 05:01, according to Romania's Ministry of National Defense. Debris from the drone was later found in the Black Sea near Constanta. Moldova's defence ministry confirmed that a Geran-type Shahed drone had traversed its airspace from Ukraine toward Romania.
The incidents follow a series of recent drone interceptions by Romanian pilots and increased NATO presence on the alliance's eastern flank.
