Ukraine conducts large-scale drone raid on Russia, killing at least six
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russian territory, causing civilian deaths in the Moscow and Rostov regions, while Russian missile strikes hit Ukrainian cities, killing several more.
Ukraine deployed hundreds of drones across Russian territory on Sunday, resulting in at least six civilian deaths. An 83-year-old man was killed when a drone struck a private home in the Moscow region, and five people died in the southwestern Rostov region after a swarm of more than 150 drones damaged homes, a railway station and sparked a forest fire. Local officials said a Ukrainian attack also ignited a blaze at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk.
Russia’s defence ministry reported destroying 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, including about 600 heading toward Moscow, with a third intercepted over the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the number of drones detected.
In retaliation, Russian missile strikes hit Ukrainian cities. Two people were killed and 14 wounded in Kryvyi Rih, where a missile also damaged an ArcelorMittal steel plant, and a separate strike in the Zaporizhzhia region killed a man and a woman. Additional Russian attacks caused fires in Kyiv, including at a major book market near the Pochaina metro station, injuring six people.
"Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
NATO forces were also involved after a Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace near the city of Galaţi. Romanian authorities reported debris from the downed drone in the Black Sea near Constanța. Moldova’s defence ministry said a Shahed-type drone had traversed its airspace from Ukraine toward Romania. The incident follows a series of recent drone interceptions by Romanian pilots along the eastern NATO flank.
Russia’s defence ministry said it targeted a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a facility producing domestically made Flamingo missiles, which Ukraine has used in recent long-range attacks on Russian targets.
