Bears camp highlights progress at quarterback, tight end and offensive line
Chicago Bears coach Albert Breer identified improvements in quarterback Caleb Williams, emerging tight end Colston Loveland and right tackle Darnell Wright, while noting depth questions on the defensive line and safety positions.
Chicago Bears coach Albert Breer said his observations after the 14th day of training camp include a noticeable maturation in quarterback Caleb Williams, who has taken greater ownership of the offense and shows increased focus and command. Breer noted that Williams still needs to refine routine aspects of his game and aim to become a more consistent passer.
The coach highlighted tight end Colston Loveland as a potential breakout player, praising his work ethic, toughness and intelligence, and comparing his speed and smoothness to that of a younger Travis Kelce. Breer suggested the Bears may use more three-tight-end sets, given the presence of Cole Kmet and rookie Sam Roush.
Right tackle Darnell Wright, whose contract was recently extended, received commendation for a strong offseason and elevated practice performance, including work with veteran Terron Armstead. Competition remains at left tackle among Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie, with Jones sidelined by injury and former starter Ozzy Trapilo possibly returning sooner than expected.
On defense, Breer pointed to depth at defensive tackle, citing veterans Gervon Dexter Sr. and Grady Jarrett and the emergence of sixth-round pick Jordan van den Berg, a former South African rugby player. He also mentioned the ongoing search for a reliable edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat, with Austin Booker showing promise.
Safety depth is a concern after Seattle acquisition Coby Bryant was ruled out until October and his replacement Cam Lewis suffered an injury. The Bears will need to rely on other players to fill the gap, while linebacker Devin Bush appears to be solid alongside T.J. Edwards.
