Cambridge Sociology Professor Resigns Amid Plagiarism Investigation

Summary

Professor Jason Arday stepped down from his role at the University of Cambridge as the institution opened an inquiry into his academic credentials and alleged plagiarism.

The University of Cambridge announced that Professor Jason Arday, who was appointed as its youngest Black professor in 2023, has resigned from his position as a sociology professor while an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments proceeds. The university said the inquiry was launched after receiving new information and will also address a number of ongoing complaints of academic misconduct.

Media reports have alleged that Arday plagiarised material in his PhD thesis and other research, and have questioned claims he ran 600 miles in six days and raised £5.5 million for charity. In a letter posted on the Good Law Project website, Arday said the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a “profound toll” on him and his family, and that stepping away was the only way to end the episode. He added that his decision should not be seen as a loss of faith in scholarship.

In a separate interview, Arday denied the allegations, describing the treatment he received as “unacceptable.” The university said it would not comment further until the investigation is complete and that it continues to provide support to the professor. Jesus College, where Arday holds a fellowship, said it is conducting its own parallel process and will support the university’s investigation, urging compassion and respect for Arday and his family.
