Candida auris Cases Rise in Arizona as Outbreak Spreads to Multiple States

Resumen

Arizona health officials report a surge in drug-resistant Candida auris infections, with cases climbing sharply in Pima County and the pathogen now affecting 27 states nationwide.

Arizona has recorded more than 300 cases of the drug-resistant fungus Candida auris since 2022, and the number of infections in Pima County rose from 31 in 2024 to 59 in 2025, according to epidemiologist Eleana Acosta Zavala of the county health department.

"Candida auris can spread through contact with affected patients and also with contaminated surfaces or equipment around the affected patient," Acosta Zavala said.

The fungus can invade the bloodstream, wounds, ears and other body sites, producing symptoms that vary depending on the infection site, she added. Health officials emphasize hand hygiene as the most effective preventive measure.

Data from the University of Texas at San Antonio indicate that 27 states are experiencing an increase in Candida auris infections, underscoring the pathogen’s expanding geographic reach.
