Whole Foods expands recall to guacamole and dips amid salmonella outbreak
Whole Foods Market said it expanded its recall on August 13 to include guacamole, dips and other prepared foods that contain fresh jalapeños, urging customers in 12 states to throw away the products and seek refunds. The recall follows an earlier August 4 action in which the retailer pulled salsas, pico de gallo and other jalapeño-based items after the Food and Drug Administration identified possible salmonella contamination in peppers supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. The outbreak, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked to imported Mexican jalapeños, has sickened at least 345 people across 27 states. Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba Mexican Eats both removed jalapeños from their menus, and a Minnesota plaintiff has sued Chipotle over alleged infections.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service also issued a public-health alert for red meat and poultry products containing jalapeños, while Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled numerous jalapeño-containing foods distributed to retailers in 26 states.
