Trump administration confronts munitions shortfalls and political pressure in Iran war

U. S. officials said the Iran war, now in its sixth month, has left missile defenses depleted, costs climbing and political pressure mounting, complicating President Donald Trump's strategy. The Pentagon then gave defense contractors 21 days to submit accelerated production plans for critical weapons after analyses indicated sharp declines in Patriot, THAAD and long-range missile stocks.

President Trump subsequently dismissed media reports of shortages, asserting that the United States has ample munitions and promising to identify leakers. The White House and Pentagon also disputed claims that interceptor inventories were critically low, maintaining that overall munitions remain sufficient. Earlier, Army officials said most ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles had been expended. Military officials added that roughly four-fifths of THAAD missiles and half of Patriot interceptors had been used since the war started.
