Brewers acquire Dustin May and JoJo Romero from Cardinals after missing out on Tarik Skubal
Milwaukee added starter Dustin May and reliever JoJo Romero from St. Louis in a deadline trade, while the Cardinals received two minor-league outfield prospects.
The Milwaukee Brewers completed a deadline trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, acquiring right-hander Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero for minor-league outfielders Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale, according to reports. May, who signed a one-year, $12 million contract with St. Louis this offseason, joins a Brewers rotation that already includes Jacob Misiorowski, Shane Drohan, Logan Henderson, Brandon Sproat and prospect Kyle Harrison. Romero, currently on the injured list after an appendectomy, adds a third left-handed option to a bullpen that already features Aaron Ashby and DL Hall.
Milwaukee entered the trade deadline with the league's best record at 69-42, a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and had previously pursued Tarik Skubal. The team opted for May and Romero to address a pitching need after the Skubal deal fell through. The Cardinals, struggling with a recent stretch of losses and positioned below .500, added two prospects that MLB Pipeline ranks among the top 15 in Milwaukee's system.
"May raises the floor of Milwaukee's rotation more than the ceiling," a league analyst noted, adding that his performance could earn him a spot in the postseason rotation.
"Romero gives the Brewers a third lefty relief option," the analyst said, highlighting the potential value against left-handed heavy lineups in the playoffs.
Analysts graded the trade as a "C" for Milwaukee, indicating that while the players are solid, they are unlikely to significantly improve the team's already strong roster, and a "B" for St. Louis, reflecting a market-consistent return.
