Maryland Jockey Club Sets 2027 Preakness for May 23, Aligning with Memorial Day
The Maryland Jockey Club announced on 3 August, according to BloodHorse, that the 2027 Preakness Stakes will be run May 23, moving the race to the fourth of May and aligning it with Memorial Day weekend festivities. The shift creates a longer gap after the Kentucky Derby. Governor Wes Moore said Maryland will retain ownership of the Preakness despite the upcoming six-race championship series, according to WBAL-TV.
NBC secured the broadcast rights for the race, outbidding Fox, Netflix and Amazon, as reported by Awful Announcing. Earlier in the year, Churchill Downs Inc. and the New York Racing Association launched a new six-race Thoroughbred Championship Series that excludes the Preakness, a development described by Yahoo Sports and Thoroughbred Daily News, which raised concerns that the historic Triple Crown could lose relevance.
