Giants complete five trades in final day before MLB deadline

Résumé

San Francisco finalized five deals, including moves involving Heliot Ramos, Luis Arraez and pitcher Robbie Ray, as the MLB trade deadline approached.

San Francisco completed five transactions in the last 24 hours before the MLB trade deadline, adding depth to its roster while shedding several players. The most recent deal sent left-handed reliever Erik Miller to Boston for shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer, a move reported by The Athletic.

Miller, 28, posted a 2.76 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 32.2 innings for the Giants this season and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time. Mayer, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 draft, has struggled at the major-league level, batting .223 in 364 career plate appearances, and is currently recovering from a forearm injury.

Earlier, the Giants traded outfielder Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees for left-handed pitcher Henry LaLane and infielder Kaeden Kent, according to reports from The Athletic and ESPN. Ramos, 26, was hitting .264 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 74 games.

The club also dealt second baseman Luis Arraez and reliever Caleb Killian to the Philadelphia Phillies in a four-player swap that brought pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to San Francisco. Arraez, who was batting .324, had been a consistent offensive contributor.

Starting pitcher Robbie Ray was sent to the San Diego Padres in exchange for top-10 prospects Miguel Mendez and Joniel Hernandez, as reported by ESPN. Ray posted a 3.08 ERA with 107 strikeouts for the Giants this season.

The series of moves, which also included a trade of starter Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, were completed before the 3 p.m. deadline on Monday.
