Padres and Phillies Among Teams Targeting Giants' Robbie Ray
The San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly interested in acquiring left-hander Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants as the pitcher approaches free agency.
Robbie Ray, a 34-year-old left-handed starter for the San Francisco Giants, is emerging as a prominent trade candidate as he nears free agency. Reports indicate that the San Diego Padres have expressed interest, while the Philadelphia Phillies are also monitoring the situation. The Chicago Cubs were previously linked to Ray before acquiring Kevin Gausman from Toronto.
The Giants, who have already moved players such as Tyler Mahle, Luis Arraez and Caleb Kilian, are expected to consider offers that address both salary and prospect compensation. Ray is under a $25 million contract for the current season with more than $7 million remaining, a factor that could influence trade negotiations for teams already near the competitive balance tax threshold.
Analysts note that Ray’s 3.08 ERA this season may be misleading, citing a 20.9% strikeout rate, an 11.1% walk rate and a 4.36 FIP that suggest a less dominant performance. His success has been aided by a low batting average on balls in play and a high strand rate.
The Padres, seeking to strengthen a rotation that includes Michael King and several younger arms, could view Ray as a potential No. 2 starter. However, the club’s farm system has been depleted by recent budget constraints, limiting the prospects they can offer in a trade.
The Phillies, whose rotation features Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo, are looking to address recent struggles from Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter. The team has been active at the trade deadline, adding players like Arraez, Kilian and Brooks Raley, and may consider Ray as part of its effort to solidify the starting staff.
