Drone strike hits crowded Russian Black Sea beach, killing seven

Resumen

A projectile hit a beach in Arkhipo-Osipovka, Russia, killing seven people, including four children, and injuring dozens, with Russian officials blaming Ukraine and Ukrainian officials attributing the casualties to Russian air-defense fire.

A projectile struck a packed beach in the Black Sea resort of Arkhipo-Osipovka near Gelendzhik on Monday, killing seven people, four of them children, and wounding at least 58 others, regional authorities said. Video of the incident showed a fireball explosion followed by panic among beachgoers.

The Russian Mission to the Geneva office posted on X that the attack was carried out by a Ukrainian-launched drone and described it as a "bloody attack" on civilians. Regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the strike targeted civilian infrastructure and that emergency services were responding at the scene.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces officer Andriy Kovalenko contested the Russian account on Telegram, stating that Russian air-defense units had shot down a drone over the beach, and that falling debris caused the casualties. He added that Ukraine aims to target Russian military-industrial facilities rather than civilian sites.

Both sides cited the incident as evidence of the ongoing conflict’s impact on civilian areas, while investigations into the exact cause of the explosion continue.
