Microsoft plans to add Xbox 360 games to PC, handhelds and Project Helix

Summary

A leaked developer document indicates Microsoft will make Xbox 360 titles available on Windows PCs, its upcoming Project Helix console and handheld devices, with rollout expected between 2027 and 2028.

Microsoft is preparing to extend its Xbox back-compatibility program to include Xbox 360 games on Windows PCs, the upcoming Project Helix console and handheld devices, according to a document shared with developers. The leak, reported by The Verge, shows that developers and rights holders will be able to opt in, set pricing and decide whether their titles join Xbox Game Pass. The rollout is slated for 2027-2028, ahead of the next-generation hardware launch. A separate timeline sets the full launch of original Xbox titles on PC for October 2026. Microsoft also detailed a disc-to-digital initiative that would grant a digital license to a game when its disc is inserted, allowing the license to move between accounts and enabling used-game sales and disc sharing. The beta for this program began last month, with a full launch originally planned for August, but it has been delayed without a new date announced.
