Xbox plans disc-to-digital service launch in August 2026, outlines PC backward-compatibility roadmap

Summary

A leaked internal email suggests Xbox will introduce a disc-to-digital conversion program in August 2026 and expand its backward-compatibility emulator, Project Helix, to PC by October 2026.

Xbox is reportedly preparing to roll out a disc-to-digital conversion service, called Positron, in August 2026, according to a leaked internal email shared by a console modder. The email states that users will insert a physical disc and receive a linked digital license, though details on license transfer when the disc changes hands were not provided.

The same correspondence outlines an expansion of Xbox’s backward-compatibility program to Windows PCs under the codename Project Helix. The roadmap indicates an early-access phase launched last month, with a full release slated for October 2026 and further extensions over the following years. The email notes that games will run via an emulator that appears as a native PC title, and that publishers must authorize each title individually; Microsoft will not publish games unilaterally.

"Disc to Digital will officially arrive in August 2026. The user inserts a disc, and a digital license is linked to that disc," the leaked email reads.

"On Helix, the game will run with the emulator, but visually it will appear as if it were a normal PC game. Xbox reminds publishers that no port will be necessary to enable this. Each game will be certified title by title," the document adds.

Analysts note that while the initiative could aid game preservation, participation will depend on third-party publishers, meaning not all legacy titles are guaranteed to become available through the service.
