Yankees acquire Luis García Jr., Mets send Freddy Peralta to Rays, Dodgers trade Tarik Skubal to Tigers
The Yankees added first baseman Luis García Jr. from Washington, the Mets dealt pitcher Freddy Peralta to Tampa Bay, and the Dodgers sent Tarik Skubal to Detroit in a series of deadline moves.
The New York Yankees completed their first trade at the 2026 deadline by acquiring left-handed first baseman Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals. In exchange, Washington received four right-handed pitchers, including relievers Yovanny Cruz and Ben Grable, as well as veteran Jake Bird and prospect Jack Cebert. The deal gives the Yankees a left-handed bat to help fill gaps left by injuries to Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, while Washington adds depth to a bullpen that has struggled this season.
In a separate transaction, the Tampa Bay Rays obtained right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets. Peralta, who posted a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts for the Mets this year, will join a Rays rotation that is seeking to replace the injured Shane McClanahan. The move is intended to bolster Tampa Bay’s pitching staff as it pursues a postseason run.
The Los Angeles Dodgers traded right-handed starter Tarik Skubal to the Detroit Tigers. Detroit received prospect River Ryan, a right-hander who has shown a strong four-seam fastball and a varied secondary-pitch mix in Triple-A. The Tigers aim to add a young arm with upside to their rotation, while the Dodgers retain depth that allows them to continue competing for a third consecutive World Series title.
"We believe these moves address immediate needs and position our clubs for the stretch run," a spokesperson for the Yankees said.
"The Rays are pleased to add a pitcher of Peralta’s experience as we look to solidify our rotation," a Rays representative commented.
"Detroit is excited about the potential of River Ryan and expects him to contribute at the major-league level soon," a Tigers official added.
