Geno Segers Exits Broadway's 'Hadestown' Amid Controversy

Summary

Geno Segers will no longer join the cast of Broadway's 'Hadestown' as Hades following the resurfacing of past comments that drew criticism.

Geno Segers, recently announced as the new actor to portray Hades in Broadway's 'Hadestown,' will not be joining the production. This decision comes after online discussions and videos surfaced, where Segers had previously made remarks perceived as anti-transgender and critical of pronoun usage, as well as comments regarding trans athletes in women's sports.

In a statement, the producers of 'Hadestown' confirmed that they and Segers had mutually agreed to part ways, stating, "Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly." Following this development, Segers has made his Instagram account private and removed certain videos from his YouTube channel.

The new principal cast of 'Hadestown' is set to begin performances on September 1 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, featuring Kayko as Orpheus, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Eurydice, Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes, and Amber Iman as Persephone. The musical, written by Anaïs Mitchell, intertwines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice with Hades and Persephone. Since its Broadway debut in 2019, the show has garnered significant acclaim and is set to open on London's West End in 2024.
