WestJet flight attendants agree to tentative wage deal, ending three-day strike

Resumen

Canada's WestJet and the union representing its 4,400 flight attendants reached a tentative agreement on wages, ending a strike that caused hundreds of cancellations.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents WestJet's 4,400 flight attendants, announced a tentative wage agreement with the airline on Monday, bringing a three-day strike to a close. The dispute had led to the cancellation of 615 flights and affected roughly 250,000 passengers during a holiday weekend.

Union president Alia Hussain said the deal expands the flight-credit system by recognizing more of the crew’s work time and includes general compensation increases. Details of the agreement will be shared with members before a ratification vote.

WestJet had previously offered a 13% wage increase for the current year, followed by 2.5% annual raises through 2029, plus additional pay for all hours worked that would amount to another 12% increase. The airline did not disclose the final terms of the tentative deal.

Canada's jobs minister Patty Hajdu issued a statement welcoming the resolution, noting that the federal government and Canadians appreciate the parties reaching an agreement.
