Braves integrate new acquisitions ahead of Marlins series
Atlanta's Braves welcomed back Sean Murphy and Ha-Seong Kim from injury and introduced recent trade additions Lane Thomas, Tyler Mahde and Brent Suter as they prepare for the opening game against the Marlins.
Atlanta's Braves entered Tuesday night's series opener against the Miami Marlins with several roster changes. Catcher Sean Murphy and shortstop Ha-Seong Kim returned from the injured list, while outfielder Lane Thomas, right-handed starter Tyler Mahle and left-handed reliever Brent Suter met their new teammates after recent trades.
Thomas, acquired from the Kansas City Royals, is expected to platoon in left field with Mike Yastrzemski and provide a right-handed bat off the bench. He posted an .800 OPS in 135 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this season, and manager Brian Weiss said his ability to handle right-handed pitchers makes him useful beyond a strict platoon role.
Second-base prospect Jorge Dubón, also from the Royals, may start at shortstop when Weiss prefers to rest Jim Jarvis against left-handed starters. Dubón's versatility across the outfield could allow more flexibility for Ronald Acuña Jr. as a designated hitter, and he could occasionally fill in at second or third base.
Kim, who signed a one-year, $20 million contract in the offseason, has struggled offensively after fracturing his right middle finger in May, hitting .068 for Atlanta this season. Weiss indicated that Jarvis will remain the primary shortstop while Kim works toward a larger role.
Murphy, returning from a stint on the injured list for right-finger inflammation, will resume catching duties, with Drake Baldwin available as a designated hitter against left-handed starters. Weiss praised Murphy's defensive skills and game-calling ability.
Reliever Brent Suter, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, is projected to provide long-relief and middle-relief innings, easing the workload of the primary bullpen. Weiss described him as a durable, professional presence in the clubhouse.
Mahle, obtained from the San Francisco Giants, is slated to join the rotation for the weekend series at Yankee Stadium. He posted a 3.79 ERA in seven starts after returning from a hamstring strain, and Weiss noted his recent improvement in depth and pitch quality.
