Seattle Mariners complete two deadline trades, adding outfielders and pitchers
Seattle traded Luis Castillo to Chicago for three prospects and cash, and acquired Taylor Ward from Baltimore for three right-handers, aiming to improve its roster ahead of the postseason.
Seattle's front office completed two transactions before the 2026 MLB trade deadline. The club sent right-hander Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox and received right-hander Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, catcher/left-fielder Boston Smith and cash considerations. The moves reduce Castillo's salary obligations for the current and next season, providing the Mariners with additional financial flexibility.
In a separate deal, Seattle acquired right fielder Taylor Ward from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for three right-handed pitching prospects: Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling. Ward, who has shifted his approach to emphasize on-base skills, leads the American League in walks and is expected to fit well with the dimensions of T-Mobile Park.
Analysts note that while the acquisitions add depth and address specific needs, they do not represent a transformative overhaul of the roster. The trades are viewed as modest upgrades that could help the team remain competitive in a close playoff race.
