Darline Graham Launches Senate Campaign in South Carolina

Résumé

Sen. Darline Graham, appointed to fill her late brother's seat, announced her candidacy for the special primary, pledging to support President Trump's agenda.

Sen. Darline Graham addressed a crowd of Republican voters in Lexington, South Carolina, marking her first public campaign appearance after being appointed to complete her brother Lindsey Graham's Senate term. She said she entered politics only after his death and pledged to promote the state and President Donald Trump’s policy priorities.

Graham, one of nine candidates in the Aug. 11 special primary, acknowledged her lack of political experience but argued she understands federal policy issues such as budgeting and health-care costs. She noted that Trump has endorsed her and urged her to run.

"I certainly never expected to be on this stage, giving this stump speech," Graham told the audience. "I’ve never had any desire to be a politician. I’m here today because I’m answering President Trump’s call to serve. I want to stand up for South Carolina, and I want to fight for President Trump’s agenda."

The event featured brief remarks from all candidates, including former governor Mark Sanford, who warned against deficit spending, and Rep. Ralph Norman, who highlighted his support for the SAVE America voting bill. Rep. Russell Fry spoke about his upbringing and work ethic.

After the speeches, attendees received free boxed lunches and participated in an informal straw poll. Graham led the poll, followed by Fry and Norman. Voters said they needed more information before deciding.

If no candidate receives a majority, a runoff is scheduled for Aug. 25, after which the Republican nominee will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November general election.
