Partial solar eclipse observed across 26 U.S. states on 12 August
USA Today reported that on 12 August 2026 a partial solar eclipse was visible across 26 U. S. states and Washington, D. C. , with the eclipse covering up to about 20% of the Sun in Alaska and 10-20% in much of New England and New York.
Earlier, AP News noted that NASA data showed partial coverage ranging from 3% to 53% across the northern United States and Canada. CBS News said the only total eclipse of 2026 would be visible from parts of Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, while Live Science described the narrow corridor of totality extending from Greenland to northeastern Spain. Space explained that the eclipse occurred during the declining phase of Solar Cycle 25, producing a solar corona more active than recent eclipses but less complex than the 2024 maximum-phase event. CNN relayed experts’ safety advice to use ISO-certified eclipse glasses or solar filters and to avoid looking at the Sun with ordinary sunglasses or unfiltered optical devices.
