Microsoft removes 32 GB RAM recommendation for Windows 11, emphasizes 8 GB optimization

Résumé

Microsoft has taken down its previous guidance suggesting 32 GB of RAM for Windows 11 power users and is now focusing on improving performance for systems with 8 GB of memory.

Microsoft has removed a page on its Learning Center that previously advised Windows 11 users to equip their PCs with 32 GB of RAM for demanding applications. The page now returns a 404 error, and archived versions show the recommendation was posted in late November 2025, alongside a note that 16 GB is sufficient for most games and 32 GB is ideal for the most demanding titles or heavy mod use.

The change comes amid a broader industry shortage of DRAM, which has raised the cost of both memory and solid-state drives. Microsoft’s President of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, said the company is working to make Windows 11 more memory-efficient, particularly for devices that ship with 8 GB of RAM, such as the base Surface Pro models.

Analysts note that many laptops, including Dell’s XPS 13, already use a large portion of their 8 GB RAM for the operating system alone, highlighting the need for better optimization. Until further improvements are released, users may need to manage their memory usage or consider higher-capacity upgrades, which remain priced at a premium.
