Herbert Shows Improved Timing with Chargers' New Passing Scheme

Résumé

Quarterback Justin Herbert displayed three consecutive on-time completions in training camp, indicating progress in the timing-focused offense introduced by coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert demonstrated improved rhythm in the first practice of the second day of training camp, completing three back-to-back throws that hit the middle of the field. The sequence began with a play-action drop that found receiver Quentin Johnston on an in-breaker, followed by a quick-drop pass to Tre’ Harris on a shallower route, and finished with a standard drop that connected with Ladd McConkey after he beat cornerback Deane Leonard.

The timing of the throws aligns with coordinator Mike McDaniel’s emphasis on rapid releases to give receivers space after the catch and to reduce hits on Herbert, who was tackled more than any other quarterback last season. McDaniel altered Herbert’s shotgun footwork in the offseason, having him set his left foot forward so he can assume a throwing stance immediately after the snap. Mastery of the new footwork and synchronized route landmarks was uneven through the spring, but the recent practice suggested the components are now “as polished as they have been since McDaniel took over,” according to the team’s observations.

Herbert, who spent the summer break working on footwork while in Oregon, said the adjustments have become second nature. > “You just get to the point where you’re not thinking about it… now you’re just throwing the ball,” he explained, noting that he can now focus on mechanics and routes rather than foot alignment.

Other notable moments from the session included running back Keaton Mitchell’s successful route and run plays, rookie receiver Brenen Thompson’s deep catch, and defensive players competing for roster spots. The Chargers’ first padded practice is scheduled for Aug. 4 in San Diego, when the offensive line and other units will undergo formal evaluation.
