Russian missile and drone barrage kills 17 near Kyiv, wounds 44
A two-hour Russian attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas killed 17 people, injured 44 and damaged several civilian facilities, while Ukrainian officials blamed a shortage of ballistic interceptors.
Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed 17 people and wounded 44 overnight, destroying a brewing plant, a construction-material warehouse and a mail-sorting centre, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the sites were linked to military logistics.
The assault, which lasted about two hours, involved 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic or supersonic missiles and 115 drones, according to Ukrainian authorities. Russian officials said the strikes hit transport, logistics and distribution centres that they said supported military activity.
Zelenskyy said the lack of ballistic-missile interceptors contributed to the casualties, adding that “ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today.” He urged partner nations to accelerate deliveries of such weapons, noting that supplies of air-defence missiles had fallen to one-third of the 2025 level earlier this year.
Ukrainian officials reported that a Nova Poshta sorting centre was hit by a cluster munition, and that Epicentr, a large retail and construction chain, suffered extensive damage with one employee killed and three wounded. A warehouse worker described hearing “very loud explosions” after an air-raid warning sounded just after midnight.
In a separate development, Ukrainian drones struck a Wildberries warehouse in Russia’s Tula region, the 14th such incident reported in three weeks, which Moscow says supplies goods usable by its armed forces. The Russian Defence Ministry also claimed to have downed 475 Ukrainian drones over 16 Russian regions and to have hit three bulk carriers in the Black Sea, alleging they were transporting weapons for Ukraine.
