Ukraine says Patriot interceptors depleted after Russian missile barrage kills 10 in Kyiv
A Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed 10 people, prompting President Zelensky to say Ukraine has run out of Patriot interceptor missiles.
Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone strike on Kyiv and surrounding areas early Saturday, resulting in 10 deaths, Ukrainian officials said. President Volodymyr Zelensky told the public that 35 missiles, including 27 ballistic missiles, and 185 drones were fired, and that only one ballistic missile was intercepted because the Patriot air-defence system lacks remaining interceptors.
Zelensky added on Telegram that each missing interceptor "saves the lives of our people" and that the shortage is increasing casualties. The attacks caused explosions in more than a dozen locations across the capital, damaging residential buildings, a school, the Lithuanian embassy and other infrastructure, according to the Prosecutor's General Office.
Local authorities reported seven fatalities in the Darnytskyi district, two in the Solomyanskyi district and one in the Kyiv region, with dozens injured, including four children with shrapnel wounds. Residents described hearing sirens and explosions around 1:30 a.m. local time, and seeing damage to ceilings and windows.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city is expanding shelter capacity as attacks continue. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for urgent delivery of additional air-defence supplies, stating that a stronger air shield is essential for the war's outcome.
