Russian missile and drone attacks kill at least eight in Ukraine, one missile lands in Poland

Résumé

A coordinated Russian missile and drone barrage across Ukraine killed eight civilians and wounded dozens, while a suspected Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace and fell in an uninhabited area.

A Russian ballistic missile and drone barrage that began overnight struck multiple regions of Ukraine, killing at least eight civilians, including children, and injuring dozens more, officials said. The attacks hit western areas far from the front line, as well as the capital Kyiv, where a missile killed a 31-year-old man and wounded two others, and the city of Lviv, where a cruise missile wounded 34 people, including three children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that more than 70 missiles, many ballistic, and over 280 attack drones were launched, with Ukrainian forces intercepting more than 260 drones. He said the strikes targeted air bases, arms factories, missile plants, aircraft repair facilities, electronic component factories and a chemical plant.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, six people were killed and ten wounded, including a 6-year-old girl and two boys aged 11 and 17, according to regional officials. In Poltava, a drone hit company warehouses, killing one person.

Poland confirmed that an unidentified object entered its airspace during the night. An F-16 fighter was dispatched, and the object disappeared from radar before a helicopter located a probable impact site near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin province. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the evidence points to a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, though authorities seek confirmation of the missile type and launch origin.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the incident as a clear demonstration of the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities, noting that improved defenses could prevent missiles from reaching NATO airspace.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its strikes aimed at Ukrainian military infrastructure, while Russian officials claimed to have shot down 258 Ukrainian drones overnight. Separate incidents in Russia involved fires at warehouses belonging to the Wildberries retailer, reportedly caused by Ukrainian drones.
