Google may brand new back-panel lighting feature as “HiLight” on Pixel 11 Pro
A lighting and color indicator that appears on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro, first seen in the Android 17 beta, is likely to be released under the name “HiLight.”
Google is reportedly preparing to launch a back-panel lighting feature on the upcoming Pixel 11 Pro under the name “HiLight.” The functionality, initially spotted in Android 17 Beta 4, uses subtle light and color on the device’s rear to signal certain activities when the phone is face down. Settings entries describe two use cases: a soft illumination for calls from favorite contacts and visual feedback during hands-free interactions with the Gemini AI assistant. Teaser images show the effect alongside the flashlight in the Pixel 11 Pro’s camera bar, displaying a rotating spectrum of colors reminiscent of a pinwheel. A source familiar with the naming says the camel-case “HiLight” is intended to convey that the feature highlights preferred contacts and Gemini while emphasizing its physical light component. It is not yet known whether third-party applications will be able to access the feature or if it will remain limited to Google-provided services.
