Lions coach says he is not concerned about Jahmyr Gibbs' contract hold-in
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the team is not worried about running back Jahmyr Gibbs' ongoing contract hold-in and emphasized that coaching duties remain his priority.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs entered the second day of a contract hold-in as the Detroit Lions prepare for the 2026 season. Head coach Dan Campbell told reporters he is not worried about the situation, noting that his focus is on coaching the players currently on the roster. > "You guys know how I feel about—how we feel about—Gibbs and what the team feels about him. I’ll leave it at that. My job is to coach who’s out there right now. I love the kid, but I’ve got a team to coach right now. And, listen, whatever all this—at some point, it’ll all get done. I’m not even sweating it," Campbell said. Gibbs remains under contract through the 2026 season with a fifth-year option already exercised for 2027, a point at which players typically begin extension talks. Campbell acknowledged that negotiations have taken longer than expected but said he is familiar with the process from his years as a player and coach. He also referenced a comment he made earlier in the year, calling Gibbs a "bell-cow," which he said may have complicated talks. The coach did not provide a timeline for Gibbs' return to practice and said the team does not have clarity on whether the hold-in will continue if an agreement is not reached. In the meantime, Campbell highlighted the benefit to other running backs, noting that the situation gives free-agent signing Isiah Pacheco, former safety Sione Vaki and depth players such as Jacob Saylors, Jabari Small and Kye Robichaux additional reps in the offensive system. > "It’s a great opportunity. This is extra reps for ‘Pop’ with us just within our system. Vaki gets these reps, Saylors, Small, Robichaux. So that’s awesome," he added.
