US Soccer extends Mauricio Pochettino contract through 2030

Resumen

The U.S. Soccer Federation and head coach Mauricio Pochettino have agreed to a new contract that will keep him in charge of the men’s national team through the 2030 World Cup cycle.

The U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Monday that it has reached a contract extension with head coach Mauricio Pochettino, securing his services through the 2030 World Cup. Negotiations had been ongoing for several months before the team’s last-16 exit at the 2026 tournament, and discussions accelerated after the World Cup.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the agreement is expected to increase Pochettino’s salary beyond the $6 million per year he earned under his previous deal, which remains the federation’s highest coaching outlay. Billionaire hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin, who funded the original contract, is reported to be the primary backer of the new agreement.

Pochettino’s role is described as “expanded,” with the senior team remaining the primary focus while the coaching staff will also advise on broader development, youth pathways, coaching education and collaboration with professional leagues.

“It has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men’s national team program even stronger,” the federation said Pochettino. “The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here. We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation.”

During his roughly 20-month tenure, Pochettino led the United States to a 4-1 group-stage win over Paraguay and a last-16 appearance before a defeat to Belgium. His record with the team stands at 18 wins, 12 losses and one draw, including a 5-1 friendly victory over Uruguay and a fourth-place finish in the 2025 Nations League.

The federation’s extension gives Pochettino another opportunity to guide the team beyond the last-16 stage, a goal that was not achieved at the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States.
