US Soccer Federation Nears Extension of Mauricio Pochettino's Contract Through 2030

Résumé

The United States Soccer Federation is reportedly close to retaining Mauricio Pochettino as head coach of the USMNT for the next World Cup cycle, extending his tenure through the 2030 tournament.

The United States Soccer Federation is said to be finalising a new agreement that would keep Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino in charge of the men’s national team through the 2030 World Cup cycle. The move follows the team’s round-of-16 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the United States lost to Belgium.

Pochettino, who was appointed in September 2024, has overseen a roster that includes players such as Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. In his first two years, the USMNT recorded a 17-12-2 record across 31 matches, though it has not yet captured a major trophy.

The federation’s decision comes after earlier managerial changes, including the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter in 2023. Reports indicated that Pochettino had been linked with a possible move to AC Milan, but the club appointed another coach, prompting the USSF to act quickly to retain him.

Analysts note that a longer contract could provide stability for the program as it prepares for the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will host. However, the extension also raises competitive concerns for other CONCACAF nations, which may face a more consistently organized U.S. side.

"I think football is possible if you believe," Pochettino said after a recent friendly win, emphasizing confidence ahead of upcoming tournaments.
