Spider-Man: Brand New Day records lowest Rotten Tomatoes score among Tom Holland's solo films
The new Spider-Man film opened to a 90% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-scored Tom Holland-led entry in the series, though it still received generally positive reviews.
The review embargo for Spider-Man: Brand New Day lifted on Tuesday morning after critics viewed the film in screenings across the United States. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie continues four years after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended with Doctor Strange erasing Peter Parker’s memory of his friends.
On its opening day, the film earned a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which has since settled at 90% based on 120 critic reviews. This makes it the lowest-scored Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie on the site, though the rating could change as the film proceeds to Thursday previews and its nationwide release on Friday.
For comparison, the previous three solo Spider-Man films starring Holland received higher scores: Spider-Man: Far from Home holds a 91% rating, Spider-Man: Homecoming a 92% rating, and Spider-Man: No Way Home leads the list with a 93% rating.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, rated PG-13, features a supporting cast that includes Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colón-Zayas, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo. The movie will play preview screenings on Thursday before its wide release on Friday.
"The film explores Peter’s struggle to reconnect with his friends while confronting a new villain, and it shows his spider-sense becoming increasingly unstable," a critic’s summary noted.
