Bucs lineman says Mayfield remains franchise quarterback amid contract talks
Tampa Bay guard Cody Mauch said on August 1 that quarterback Baker Mayfield is a franchise quarterback and that ongoing contract talks will not affect his play. Mayfield had reported to the Buccaneers' training camp on July 29 without a new deal, entering the season on a $39. 975 million expiring contract that runs through 2026.
Head coach Todd Bowles said the negotiations with Mayfield and defensive tackle Vita Vea would not distract the team. Mayfield later expressed feeling disrespected after the club missed his deadline for a new contract, while the Buccaneers reportedly prepared a two-year, $100-plus-million extension. The team later voiced dissatisfaction with Mayfield's public comments.
