Zelenskyy to Meet Trump Amid Overlapping U.S.-Iran and Russia-Ukraine Conflicts

Resumen

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to discuss support with President Donald Trump as tensions rise from Iran's retaliation to a Ukrainian strike and Russia's ongoing invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected at the White House on Tuesday for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, seeking to reinforce Kyiv's support as the wars involving Russia and Iran intersect. The meeting follows a recent Ukrainian long-range strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea that killed one sailor and injured several others, prompting Iran's foreign minister to say the attack "cannot go unanswered."

"Ukraine achieved very strong results with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea – including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship," Zelenskyy posted on X.

Analysts note the incident underscores a growing convergence of the conflicts. Christopher Granville, managing director at TS Lombard, described the strike as a "very significant" development and warned that Iran has vowed retaliation, though the full military impact remains uncertain. Ukraine's foreign minister called Iran's threats "unjustified and groundless," accusing Tehran of aiding Russian aggression with weapons such as Shahed drones.

Security expert Hamidreza Azizi said Iran could respond politically by recognizing Russian control of Crimea and the Donbas, and highlighted that Iran's war is becoming increasingly intertwined with the Saudi-Houthi confrontation and the Russia-Ukraine war. Zelenskyy will also attend the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, providing another opportunity to engage with Trump after their contentious Oval Office meeting last year.
