NBCUniversal to bundle Peacock Premium with YouTube Premium starting next year
NBCUniversal will add its Peacock Premium service to YouTube Premium at no extra cost for U.S. subscribers, marking a shift toward content aggregation in the streaming market.
NBCUniversal announced that beginning early next year its Peacock Premium channel will be included in the YouTube Premium subscription for U.S. users. The integration will give YouTube Premium members access to Peacock’s lineup, including shows such as "Love Island USA" and the Real Housewives franchise, as well as NBC’s live sports rights to the NFL and NBA, without changing the $15.99-per-month price of YouTube Premium.
YouTube Premium, the ad-free subscription service separate from YouTube TV, reports 125 million global users, though it does not disclose the number of U.S. subscribers. The deal follows a similar arrangement NBCUniversal made with Apple TV, but unlike the Apple offer, the YouTube partnership does not require an additional fee or an opt-in step for customers.
Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh said the strategy reflects a willingness to partner beyond its own platforms, noting that “our approach is to build great businesses that serve our own platforms, but look for opportunities to partner.” NBCUniversal, which plans to spin off from Comcast next year, aims to reach a younger audience that spends much of its viewing time on YouTube, potentially boosting advertising revenue.
For YouTube, the addition of Peacock content strengthens its Premium offering and may support future bids for live-sports rights, after missing out on several NFL games to Netflix earlier this year. Industry analysts suggest the agreement could set a template for other media companies to license content to large aggregators such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon and ESPN, which is already exploring similar bundling arrangements.
The move highlights a third phase of the streaming wars, shifting from launching standalone services to seeking profitability and now to aggregating content across dominant platforms.
