ICE to expand arrests of Haitian nationals as TPS ends

Résumé

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is set to increase operations to locate and detain Haitian migrants whose Temporary Protected Status is slated to expire, with a focus on Ohio following a Supreme Court decision.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing to intensify efforts to locate and arrest Haitian nationals whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is expected to end soon, federal sources said. The operation could begin as early as this week and will target areas with sizable Haitian communities, including Springfield, Ohio. The move follows a Supreme Court ruling that is expected to be transmitted to lower courts on Monday, allowing the administration to proceed with ending TPS for more than 300,000 Haitians.

"Today, the Supreme Court affirmed what President Trump has always maintained: temporary protected status is, by definition, temporary. It was never intended to be a pathway to permanent status or legal residency," White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital. "The Court vindicates DHS yet again. The T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY, yet many of these designations became de facto amnesty. This is a win for the rule of law and common sense," DHS General Counsel James Percival wrote on X. The Supreme Court had recently reversed lower-court orders that had delayed the termination of TPS for Haiti and Syria while related lawsuits were pending. TPS was originally granted to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake to allow affected nationals to live and work legally in the United States on a temporary basis.
