Red Sox trade Connelly Early for infielder Curtis Mead as roster shake-up continues
Boston traded left-hander Connelly Early to the Blue Jays and added power-hitting infielder Curtis Mead, signaling a willingness to make further moves and confidence in recent acquisition Jake Bennett.
Boston traded left-handed starter Connelly Early to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of Sunday’s 6-1 win, while acquiring versatile infielder Curtis Mead from Washington. Early, who is on the injured list with elbow inflammation, posted an 8-7 record and a 3.24 ERA in 21 starts for the Red Sox this season.
"This is probably the first [experience with a player] that I’ve been close with [getting] traded," said teammate Tolle, adding that the club is focused on making the team as competitive as possible.
Mead, a right-handed hitter who appeared in 87 games last year with 17 home runs, a .852 OPS and experience at all four infield positions, is expected to see regular playing time at second base, while third-baseman Caleb Durbin said he is prepared to play wherever needed.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said the move addresses run-scoring gaps and adds a power bat to the lineup. The trade also reflects confidence in left-hander Jake Bennett, acquired in December, who has posted a 2.58 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP in 10 starts and remains under team control for five more seasons.
"It sucks to see him go, but I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for him," Bennett said of Early’s departure.
Players expressed optimism about the roster changes, noting improved chemistry and a sense that the organization is now willing to pursue major additions.
