Chiefs rookies Kahlil Benson and Cyrus Allen stand out in day three of training camp
Rookie offensive tackle Kahlil Benson earned praise for his physical tools, while rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen impressed coaches with reliable catches during Kansas City Chiefs' third day of camp.
Kansas City Chiefs held their third day of training camp on Friday in St. Joseph, completing a two-hour practice before pads are introduced on Monday. Head coach Andy Reid reported only one injury, a hamstring strain to defensive end Ashton Gillotte, and highlighted the contributions of two recent additions.
Undrafted rookie offensive tackle Kahlil Benson started at right tackle for the second straight day. Reid said Benson "has done a nice job" and noted his strength, athleticism and footwork, adding that the young player still needs to develop consistency in the scheme. "He’s got talent," Reid said, emphasizing that the evaluation will continue once full pads are used and preseason games begin.
Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen emerged as the most consistent target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes during seven-on-seven drills and a full-team period, catching a one-handed pass and a tight-window throw. Reid affirmed that Mahomes trusts Allen, though he also mentioned areas for improvement. Third-year receiver Xavier Worthy recalled having predicted Allen's strong showing earlier in the offseason.
Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah filled in for the injured Gillotte, with Reid noting his improved explosiveness. Linebacker Drue Tranquill described a recent collision with running back Kenneth Walker as a "small moment" that reflects the competitive intensity of camp. Backup quarterback Justin Fields displayed accurate deep throws, while second-year running back Brashard Smith saw increased involvement with the starters. The practice continued to emphasize under-center formations in both team and seven-on-seven drills.
