49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to miss part of training camp after car accident
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained non-life-threatening injuries, including a concussion, in a two-vehicle crash and will participate in training camp on a limited basis.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a two-vehicle collision near Stanford University on July 14. The team said his injuries are non-life-threatening, but he suffered a concussion and will take part in training camp activities only in a limited capacity as he recovers.
Assistant head coach Chris Foerster will assume additional responsibilities during Shanahan's absence, working with offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer to prepare the roster for the first practice on July 26.
"Kyle is doing good. He's got some bumps and bruises. He did suffer a concussion in the accident, has some lingering effects from that concussion," 49ers president of football operations and general manager John Lynch said at a press conference. "We're going to let the condition, the doctors, dictate how he comes back, when he comes back. It's kind of like we do with our players, a phased back approach."
Lynch added that the organization would keep the focus on Shanahan's health and provide updates as appropriate. He praised Foerster's familiarity with Shanahan's coaching style and said the staff is prepared to maintain continuity.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, who spoke with Shanahan after the crash, expressed relief that both drivers were unharmed and offered his support for the coach's recovery.
"Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay. I think the most important thing is that he's on the road to recovery," McVay said.
Police reports indicated no impairment was suspected and no citations were issued. One driver was taken to a hospital for treatment. The 49ers are scheduled to open their 2026 season on September 10 against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
